HB Zone Wk is the weak side variant of a zone running scheme out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close, sending the offensive line and fullback flow to the weak side while the HB reads the blocks and picks his gap. This is a base run play built to attack light boxes and gap exchange from linebackers, not a play-action or RPO look. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback first, then bounce to the weak side edge if the backside linebacker crashes down or the defensive end squeezes hard inside.
Watch the weak side defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line every snap the cutback lane will be there against zone flow. Look for a Mike linebacker who flows too fast to the play side, that overcommitment opens the backside cutback that this play is designed to hit. Against a stacked box with 8 defenders or a run blitz called from the weak side, this play gets stuffed quickly since the numbers advantage disappears. Check for a user-controlled defender spying the backside cutback lane, a smart human opponent will sit their Mike or a safety in the hole to jump the cutback read. If the defense shows two deep safeties with linebackers playing light in the box, this is a green light situation since it usually signals a pass shell not committed to stopping the run.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a favorable numbers advantage.
Use the trio close alignment with the extra tight end to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to the weak side, since that tips run blitz intent.
Hot route the fullback to a lead block on the play side linebacker if you see a Mike linebacker cheating weak pre-snap.
Pair this with HB Duo and HB Outside Zone in the same set so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation alone.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up PA Slide Cross or PA Cross Dig later in the series once linebackers start flowing hard to zone runs.
