Stick out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close is a quick-hitting zone beater built around the classic stick concept: a flat route, a stick (hook) route settling at 5 yards, and a corner or out route stretching the boundary vertically to hold the deep defender. The line uses a standard pass protection scheme to hold up for a quick five step drop, letting the QB get the ball out fast. Primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he widens with the flat route, throw the stick sitting in the window behind him, and if he sinks under the stick, hit the flat for a easy checkdown with room to run.
Key the flat defender first: if he sinks with the stick route, throw underneath to the flat for a free conversion. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap since shallow linebackers signal zone drops that make the stick route a low percentage throw into a crowded window. If the corner presses at the line and the safety shows two high, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, which favors the flat route since the corner route will be squeezed. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting the stick route or lurking in the throwing lane, since that is the biggest threat to this concept and should trigger the flat or corner as the answer. Cover 3 with the middle linebacker spying or blitzing off the edge is where this play excels, since the stick route settles right into the vacated zone behind the rushing linebacker.
Use this on third and short to third and medium since the stick route settles right in the sticks for an easy conversion.
Pre-snap, identify if you are facing zone or man by checking linebacker depth and corner alignment, since this concept loses value against tight man coverage with no natural picks.
Hot route the backside receiver into a drag or slant if you diagnose Cover 3 or Cover 4, giving you a crosser to punish underneath zone defenders sitting on the stick.
Pair this call with Y Shallow Cross or Mesh from the same set so defenders start jumping shallow crossers, opening up the stick window even wider on subsequent snaps.
Against Cover 2, throw the corner route on the outside before the safety can rotate over the top, since the stick concept naturally attacks the flat defender and creates a two on one on the boundary side.
