Spacing X-Choice

Breakdown

Spacing X-Choice out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close is a zone beater built around a horizontal stretch on the underneath levels, with the X receiver running a choice route that lets him settle into open grass or break away from the nearest defender based on coverage. The trio bunch look to the closed side creates natural rubs and picks against man coverage while the spacing concept floods the flat, hook, and curl zones to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. Primary read progression starts with the X-Choice route since it adjusts live, then works to the underneath spacing routes to the trio side if the choice route is covered, and finishes with the checkdown to the back.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the trio side, a single high safety with tight corner leverage suggests man coverage that the bunch rubs will exploit. Post-snap, watch the flat defender and curl to hook defender leverage, if they widen too fast the choice route will sit down in the vacated zone for an easy completion. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle, since spacing concepts live in that area and an aggressive user lurk can jump the choice route or the underneath crosser. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells where zone defenders stay patient and do not overcommit, since the spacing windows shrink significantly. Blitz-heavy man packages with press corners on the trio side can disrupt the timing of the choice route, so be ready to hot route the outlet or check down quickly if you see extra rushers at the line.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a slide protection check to identify if the defense is showing zone or man before the snap, since the X-Choice route completely changes behavior depending on leverage. Against zone shells, look immediately for the soft spot in the underneath zones created by the spacing concept, the choice route will settle right into the void between the flat and curl defenders. Against man coverage, trust the trio bunch to create natural separation through rubs and target the choice route on a speed break away from the trailing corner. This play is best called on third and short to third and medium since the spacing concept guarantees a high floor completion underneath. Pair this with Read X-Choice in the same set to keep the defense guessing between the standard spacing look and the RPO read version, and mix in PA Slide Cross or PA Cross Dig from the same formation to punish defenders who key on the quick game too aggressively.
