Y Shallow Cross

Breakdown

Y Shallow Cross is a man beater built around the Y receiver running a shallow crosser underneath while a dig or deep cross clears out behind it, creating a natural rub against man defenders and picking off trailing linebackers. The backside typically works a corner or curl route to hold safety help, while the running back releases to the flat as a checkdown and screen valve. Primary read progression starts with the shallow cross to see if it springs open off the pick, then works to the deep cross or dig sitting down over the middle, with the flat route as the final outlet against blitz.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, this usually signals man coverage and opens up the shallow cross as your first read against trailing defenders. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into deep zone drops the shallow crosser will have a soft spot to settle into for an easy completion. Key the flat defender or nickel corner, if they jump the shallow route immediately you likely have zone with a lurking underneath defender, so progress to the dig or deep cross instead. Recognize Cover 2 shells by two deep safeties splitting the field, this squeezes the deep cross and dig, so rely on the shallow route or flat check down before the corner can undercut. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge remove flat coverage, so the running back's release into the flat becomes the fastest answer against pressure looks like nano blitzes or overload fronts.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect man coverage, since the shallow route thrives on rub concepts against man defenders trailing across the field.

Pre-snap, check for single high safety or man alignment on the corners, this tells you the shallow cross will have room to work before the deep cross clears space.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops, hot route the shallow route to sit down in the void behind the linebackers instead of running full speed through traffic.

Pair this call with PA Cross Dig or Mtn Shuffle Y-Trail earlier in a series so the defense starts keying crossing routes, then hit them with Read X-Choice or Spacing X-Choice to punish over aggressive linebacker drops.

Against Cover 2, target the shallow route quickly before the underneath zone defenders can sink and close the window, since the corner route or dig can get squeezed by two deep safeties.
