HB Duo is a downhill gap run play built off the Singleback Y Off Trio Close formation, designed to double team the frontside defensive tackle and create a vertical seam for the running back before the second level flows down. The blocking scheme relies on the offensive line combo blocking at the point of attack, with the fullback or offside guard climbing to the linebacker level on the backside. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the double team combo block, then moves to the frontside linebacker fit before the running back presses the hole and reads the safety's angle to cut backside or bounce.
Check the middle linebacker's alignment before the snap, since a downhill run blitz or A gap plug will disrupt the double team timing and blow up Duo at the mothership. Watch the safety rotation post-snap, since a single high shell gives the running back more room to bounce outside while a two high shell often means an extra run defender is sitting in the box. Identify Bear fronts or 46 looks pre-snap, since these alignments stack the interior gaps and take away the double team push that Duo depends on. Key the frontside linebacker's fit angle after the snap, since if he flows too fast upfield the cutback lane opens for the running back to press backside. User controlled defenders sitting in the hole or spying the running back can diagnose Duo quickly, so mix in outside zone or a play-action shot from the same formation to keep the defense from keying the mesh point.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Duo is a gap scheme that needs numbers up front to seal the double team.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the middle linebacker's depth to confirm run blitz timing before the snap, then snap it fast if the defense shows an overloaded front.
This play thrives on second and short or first and ten in early series when you want to establish tempo and set up outside zone or PA Slide Cross later in the drive.
Pair HB Duo with HB Zone Wk and HB Outside Zone in the same set to keep defenders honest, since all three hit different landmarks but look similar pre-snap out of Y Off Trio Close.
Avoid calling this against stacked eight man fronts or teams that consistently run Bear or heavy fronts, since the double team will get overwhelmed and the cutback lanes disappear.
