WR Option out of Singleback Doubles Y Off is a receiver-controlled option route paired with a route combo designed to attack space based on the defender's leverage. The outside receiver reads the corner's technique and breaks in, out, or sits down depending on the coverage, while the rest of the route concept (typically an underneath crosser and a vertical stem) clears out zones and occupies second-level defenders. This is a man beater at its core since the option route lets your receiver counter whatever leverage the corner shows, but it also holds up against soft zone shells because the option can sit down in the void. The primary read progression starts with the option receiver: if you see man coverage, work the option route based on his break, and if the defender bails into zone, work through your underneath crosser or check to the deep shot if the safety bites.
Defensive Reads
Presnap, check safety depth: two high safeties usually mean zone coverage underneath, which favors sitting the option route down in a soft spot rather than breaking hard to the sideline. Watch the corner's alignment over the option receiver; tight press alignment signals man coverage and the option route should break away from his leverage, while a soft shell alignment signals zone and the receiver should settle into the open window. Post snap, key the flat defender and any user controlled linebacker dropping into the short zone since a well timed lurk can jump the option route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 2 with strong underneath linebacker zone drops or Cover 6 rotations that clog both the flat and the option window simultaneously. Blitz packages with a spy or a nano blitz that collapses the pocket quickly can force an early throw before the option receiver finishes his break, so know your protection before committing to this play against aggressive four man rushes.
Usage Tips
Presnap, motion the slot receiver or check the corner's alignment to confirm man versus zone before the snap since the option route lives and dies on correctly diagnosing leverage.
If you see press man with no safety help over the top, expect the option receiver to win on the inside slant break, so get ready to user him immediately off the catch for extra yards after catch.
Against soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag or have your option receiver sit in the honey hole between the flat and hook zones.
Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the option route gives you a built in answer to both man and zone without needing a full audible.
Pair WR Option with Four Verticals or PA WR Out in the same set to keep defenders guessing between a quick option beater and a deeper shot, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
