Breakdown

PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout concept out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex that sells run action before booting the QB out to the flat side, buying time for routes to develop across the field. The slide protection shifts the offensive line to the boot side while the fullback or extra blocker cleans up backside pressure, giving the QB a moving pocket and clean throwing lanes. This is a man beater at its core, since the rollout naturally creates separation against man defenders trailing from behind, and the primary read progression starts with the flat or drag route underneath before working up to the deeper crossing or corner route on the boot side.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, since if he sits on the underneath route the throwing window to the deeper crossing route opens up. Watch for contain defenders or edge rushers who stay home instead of biting on the run fake, since disciplined edge play kills the rollout and forces an early checkdown. Identify zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 before the snap, since a defender sitting in the boot side flat zone can jump the shallow route and force you to work the deeper option. Look for a user linebacker spying the QB rollout lane, since a lurking defender there can bait a throw into a pick if you rush the read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the green light, since the rollout angle plus route separation usually wins outside against trailing corners or linebackers.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep the defense honest against your run game, since the play-action fake needs a credible run threat to hold linebackers.

Check the defense pre-snap for single high safety looks, since PA Boot Slide punishes aggressive run support from safeties who bite on the fake.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deep comeback or dig if you see the defense flowing hard toward the boot side, giving you a changeup answer against pursuit.

Pair this with Wide Zone or DBL Mtn HB Wk Toss earlier in a series so the play-action fake actually freezes linebackers and safeties on this call.

Use PA Boot Slide on third and medium when you need a rollout escape valve, since the QB can throw on the run or tuck it and scramble if the underneath routes get jumped.
