Read the flat defender first, since if he sits on the underneath route the throwing window to the deeper crossing route opens up. Watch for contain defenders or edge rushers who stay home instead of biting on the run fake, since disciplined edge play kills the rollout and forces an early checkdown. Identify zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 before the snap, since a defender sitting in the boot side flat zone can jump the shallow route and force you to work the deeper option. Look for a user linebacker spying the QB rollout lane, since a lurking defender there can bait a throw into a pick if you rush the read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the green light, since the rollout angle plus route separation usually wins outside against trailing corners or linebackers.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep the defense honest against your run game, since the play-action fake needs a credible run threat to hold linebackers.
