HB Pump Draw is a play-action style draw run out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex that disguises a hand off behind a quarterback drop back fake. The offensive line sells pass protection for a beat before releasing downhill to block for the running back, and the QB carries out a pump fake to freeze linebackers and defensive linemen who are keying pass rush lanes. This is a run play at its core, not an RPO, and the primary read is patience: let the fake develop, then find the cutback lane once the front seven bites on the pass set.
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap. If they immediately drop into zone coverage or bail into pass drops, the middle of the field opens up for the draw to hit big. Diagnose the front alignment before the snap. A wide four technique or 3 tech shifted heavy to one side creates natural cutback lanes once the flow commits. Key the defensive ends and edge rushers. Speed rushers who consistently sprint upfield on pass rush reps get exploited hardest by this concept. This play struggles against disciplined gap sound defenses that stay square and read run first, especially base fronts with linebackers keeping their eyes on the backfield instead of biting on the QB fake. Zero blitz, heavy A gap pressure, and man press blitz packages shut this down fast since there is no time for the fake to develop before penetration arrives.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when the defense has shown heavy pass rush or aggressive edge speed rushers on previous snaps, since those defenders are the ones most likely to get sucked upfield by the fake.
Check the defensive line splits pre-snap. Wide four technique ends and stunt-heavy fronts open up the natural cutback lanes this play is designed to exploit.
Use manual control on the HB after the exchange so you can freelance off the initial blocking flow instead of forcing a designated hole against a stacked front.
Pair this with Stick Spacing and Salem X Kitty in the same set to keep the defense honest. If they start selling out on quick game or spot dropping underneath, HB Pump Draw punishes linebackers for reading pass and getting depth too fast.
Avoid calling this into confirmed zero blitz or heavy A gap pressure looks since the delayed development can get the runner dropped for a loss before the fake even finishes selling.
