PA Y-Corner is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex that uses a run fake to hold the linebackers and safeties before the tight end breaks into a corner route from depth. The blocking scheme mimics an outside run action to sell the fake, giving the offensive line time to protect while the corner route and a deep vertical from the backside stretch the field on both hashes. This is a man beater first and foremost, since the Y-Corner route works off leverage against a trailing linebacker or safety in man coverage, but it can also punish zone defenses that bite on the run fake and leave the deep quarter or half open. The primary read progression starts with the Y-Corner route attacking the flat to deep sideline zone, then works to the vertical route on the opposite side if the corner is capped by a safety over the top.
Identify single high safety looks (Cover 1 or Cover 3) pre-snap, since these shells are the most vulnerable to the Y-Corner route beating man coverage or sitting in the hole of a zone drop. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard on the run fake, the middle of the field opens up for the tight end to work the corner route with a step on the defender. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a safety sitting deep on the tight end side, since these shut down the corner route by capping the sideline and forcing a check to the backside vertical. Key any user-controlled defender lurking in the intermediate zone, as an aggressive user linebacker or safety can jump the corner route if the quarterback telegraphs the throw. Recognize disguised blitzes or nano blitz packages presnap, since the play-action fake delays the quarterback's ability to get the ball out and makes this play risky against a fast interior rush.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: two high shells with a safety sitting over the slot or tight end side signal the corner route may be capped, so prioritize the backside vertical instead.
Hot route the underneath outlet or flat route to a quick option if you see a heavy blitz look, since the play-action fake takes time to develop and you need a checkdown against pressure.
Pair this play with PA Boot Slide or PA Dig Deep Out in the same set to keep defenders guessing between boot action and standard play-action shots, forcing linebackers to respect multiple run fakes.
Sequence this play after running Wide Zone or DBL Mtn HB Wk Toss a few times in the same drive so the play-action fake sells harder and linebackers commit to the run fit.
