Breakdown

Choice Z-Curl out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex is a quick-hitting passing concept built around the Z receiver's choice route sitting down at the sticks while the underneath routes clear space for it. The Y (TE) and other receivers run supporting routes to occupy linebackers and hold the flat defender, giving the choice route room to break away from man coverage or settle into a soft spot versus zone. This is a solid man and zone beater, with the primary read progression starting at the Z choice route, then working to the underneath crossers or flat option if the curl is capped by a robber or underneath zone defender.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner over the Z receiver pre-snap. Tight press man alignment signals a possible jam that can disrupt the choice route timing, so be ready to work your outlet. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap. Single high (Cover 1 or Cover 3) usually leaves the underneath curl window open longer, while two high shells can rotate a safety down to jump the route. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone or spying the choice route. If he sinks hard into the curl window, look to your underneath crosser or check down instead of forcing the throw. Key the flat defender's depth post snap. If he widens with the flat route, the curl sits in a natural void, but if he stays home you may need to hold the ball an extra beat for the route to fully separate. Beware of overload blitzes off the edge since this concept relies on a clean pocket for the quarterback to read through the progression, and a fast pressure can force an early, inaccurate throw.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and medium to third and long since the Z curl route sits right at the sticks and gives you a high percentage conversion option.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the corner over the Z. If he is playing off man with outside leverage, the choice route can break inside and win immediately off the break.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, throw with anticipation into the curl window before the underneath zone defender can sink and close the throwing lane.

Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting on quick game, then hit the Z curl over the top of an aggressive underneath defender.

If you see a two high shell with the corner playing hard outside leverage, hot route the Z curl to break inside sooner or check to Stick Spacing from the same set for a quicker answer versus that look.
