Salem Whip Under is a route combination out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex built to attack both man and zone coverage with a whip route from the slot working underneath the coverage while an under route crosses the field to occupy linebackers. This is a passing concept designed as a man beater first, since the whip route creates natural separation with its sharp change of direction against press or trail defenders, but it also holds up against zone thanks to the under route settling into vacated space. The primary read starts with the whip route out of the slot, then progresses to the underneath crosser if the whip is taken away, and finishes with any checkdown or flat option as the outlet.
Watch for press man alignment on the slot receiver, since the whip route is designed to counter exactly that look and will win consistently Check safety depth before the snap, because a single high safety leaves the underneath crosser with more room against zone drops Identify if the defense is running a Cover 2 shell with corners sitting on the flats, since that look can bait the whip route into a jam at the top of the stem Key the weakside linebacker's first step, if he flows hard toward the flat or bites on run action, the under route will have a clean throwing lane Beware disguised zone blitzes where the slot defender bails into a hook zone right at the snap, since this can undercut the whip route and force you into your checkdown quickly
Look at the slot defender pre-snap to identify press man versus off man, since the whip route thrives against tight press coverage that has to flip hips
If the defense shows a two high shell, expect the underneath crosser to have room, so shift your first read there instead of forcing the whip
Use motion or a quick glance to identify Mike linebacker depth, because a shallow Mike can jump the under route and take away your second option
This play pairs well with Stick Spacing and Curls Y-Seam in the same set, since all three attack underneath zones and force linebackers to widen their drops
On third and short or third and medium, call this after running PA Boot Slide or RPO Alert Bubble to keep the defense honest on flat reads before hitting the whip route for the sticks
