Salem X Kitty is a quick-hitting man beater out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex that attacks the middle of the field with a whip or kitty style crossing route from the X receiver while the Y (TE) and backside receiver work off that traffic. The concept is built to get the X free on a shallow crossing path underneath linebackers, punishing man coverage and off-man leverage with natural rub action from the formation's tight spacing. Primary read progression starts with the X on the Kitty route, then works to the underneath crosser or check down to the HB if the initial window is late developing.
Read the slot cornerback or nickel defender pre-snap, tight man alignment with no safety help over the top signals this play should hit quickly against man beaters like the Kitty crosser. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, this is the main defender who can jump the crossing route and turn it into a turnover. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells post-snap since zone drops from linebackers can clog the crossing lane and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer than desired. Check linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink quickly into passing lanes rather than stepping up for run support the underneath crosser will be contested. Beware of nano blitzes or disguised pressure up the middle, since the quick developing crosser needs protection time and a free rusher can disrupt the timing before the X breaks open.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the slot defender to confirm man coverage before snapping since this play thrives against man and struggles versus sticky zone drops.
Get the ball out on time to the X on the Kitty route, holding the throw even half a second too long lets underneath zone defenders or lurking linebackers close the window.

On third and short to medium, this is a strong staple call because the rub concept creates natural separation against man to man without needing a deep shot.
If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell, consider hot routing the backside receiver into a deeper zone beater or switching to Curls Y-Seam instead of forcing the Kitty throw into a crowded underneath zone.
