Breakdown

Curls Y-Seam is a curl based passing concept out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex that attacks intermediate zones and man leverage with the Y receiver splitting the seam. The outside receivers run curls to sit down in front of zone defenders while the tight end (Y) climbs the seam to stress the middle linebacker and safeties, with the backside working as a shorter option against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the Y-Seam to see if the middle of the field is open, then works to the curls if the safety squeezes the seam or if you get zone coverage that leaves the curl windows soft.

Defensive Reads

Look for two high safeties rotating down into the seam, since this signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 and tells you the curls will likely be your primary target instead of the seam. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow in a hook zone the seam throw to the Y will be tight, if he bails or blitzes the seam opens up immediately. Identify man coverage by checking if the cornerbacks turn and run with the outside receivers before the ball is snapped, this play beats man to man well when the Y can win the seam against a slower linebacker or safety. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field disguising as a deep safety, since he can jump the seam route and turn it into a pick six. Cover 3 with a hard sitting curl-flat defender can shut down the outside curls, so be ready to move to the seam read or check down quickly if you see this shell post-snap.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap to identify one high versus two high safety looks, since a single high safety struggles to cover both the seam and the curls at the same depth.

If you see man coverage on the Y with no safety help over the top, hit the seam early before the linebacker can get a hand on the tight end.

Use hot routes to convert one of the curls into a quick out or speed out against aggressive zone defenders who jump the curl route too fast.

This play works best on second and medium to long third down since the curls sit at a reliable sticks depth while the seam provides a big play option.

Pair this with Choice Z-Curl or Stick Spacing from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate curl concepts, then mix in DBL Mtn PA Cross H-Flat to punish defenders who start jumping the curls too aggressively.
