The line and HB sell a draw fake to freeze linebackers and hold the safeties, while the routes are designed to hit deep over the top once the defense bites on the run action. Your primary read is the deep shot route off the play fake, typically working to the boundary or middle of the field depending on how the safety reacts, with the draw fake serving as the setup rather than an actual handoff option.
Identify single high safety alignment pre snap since it signals man coverage underneath and leaves one deep defender to beat on the shot route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the draw fake it confirms you have sold the run and the deep route will have separation. Post snap, track the deep safety flow, if he bites on the run fake or gets stuck reading backfield action the shot route wins over the top. Cover 3 and cover 1 with aggressive run support are the coverages this beats hardest since the deep defenders are outnumbered once they commit to the fake. Call this play when you have already established the actual HB Dive, DBL Mtn HB Dive, or Wide Zone run game so linebackers are conditioned to crash on run action.
Best used on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where defenses expect run and safeties creep into the box.
Check pre snap for two high shells that roll down late or single high looks with aggressive safety depth, both are prime triggers for this shot play to hit.
Use hot routes to convert underneath routes into blockers or check releases if you diagnose a heavy blitz look, this buys the QB extra time for the deep shot to develop.
Sequence this play after a series of Wide Zone or DBL Mtn HB Wk Toss calls so the defense keys run fits and linebackers step up, then hit them with the double move shot for a home run play.
Avoid calling this on third and long or in obvious pass situations since defenses will sit back in deep zone shells and take away the shot before it develops.
