Breakdown

Stick Spacing out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Flex is a classic spacing concept built to attack zone coverage while still giving you answers versus man. The routes stack a stick route from the slot, a flat route from the backfield or tight end, and an underneath curl or hitch to create horizontal stretch at the sticks, forcing linebackers and underneath defenders to declare. Your primary read starts with the stick route to the flat, working from the flat defender inside to the curl or settle route based on how the zone reacts.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first since he determines whether the stick route sits or continues to the corner. Watch for Tampa 2 or drop eight zone shells, since sinking safeties and deep linebackers can jump the stick route if you hold the ball too long. Check linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow expect them to squat on the underneath routes and take away the easy completion. Look for user lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle since they can undercut the stick route if the quarterback stares it down. Man coverage with a slot corner playing tight leverage is the biggest red flag, since the stick concept loses its natural spacing advantage and needs a hot route adjustment to survive.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the spacing concept is built to convert first downs against zone drops.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two-high or single-high shell, since spacing concepts thrive against zone shells with soft underneath coverage.

If you see man coverage pre-snap, hot route the stick route into a quick out or slant to create separation versus man defenders instead of settling into the zone window.

Pair Stick Spacing with PA Boot Slide or PA Dig Deep Out in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the deeper shot plays off similar formation looks.

Use RPO Alert Bubble on early downs to keep the defense honest, then come back to Stick Spacing once the linebackers start cheating up on run action.
