Breakdown

PA Draw Pass out of Singleback Bunch shows a play-action fake that holds the linebackers before releasing three routes into the pattern. The X receiver runs a deep vertical clearout from the outside, one bunch receiver breaks on a deep out toward the sideline, and the other bunch receiver runs a corner route working behind it, creating a natural high low stretch on the boundary defender. With the run fake occupying the front seven, the primary read progression starts at the corner route breaking to the flat area, moves to the deep out sitting on top of it, and comes back to the vertical clearout only if both intermediate windows are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender and boundary corner immediately after the snap since the corner over out combo is designed to put that defender in an impossible high low bind. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the draw fake the intermediate throwing lanes will be wide open for the quarterback. Check for a deep half or deep third safety rotating late since a strong post-snap rotation into that side can jump the deep out route and bait a turnover. Diagnose man versus zone before the snap by looking at bunch alignment leverage, tight man coverage on the bunch receivers with no help over the top is where this concept is most vulnerable to a blown coverage bust. Beware of a hard edge blitz or overload pressure to the play action side since the draw fake blocking scheme is not built to handle extra rushers and can collapse the pocket before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Look for linebackers cheating downhill pre-snap since that confirms the play action draw fake will freeze them and open the intermediate routes. Identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 before the snap because the deep out and corner combo attacks the flat and boundary defender in a two on one leverage situation. Hot route the vertical clearout receiver into a shorter hitch if you are facing heavy Cover 2 look to prevent him from running into double coverage over the top. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the run fake carries maximum credibility with the defense. Pair this call with HB Draw and Duo earlier in a series so the defense keys the run action, then hit this pass off similar formation and personnel to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
