Quick Pitch out of Singleback Bunch is a pure edge run play that gets the ball to the HB immediately with a toss action to the outside. The bunch alignment (TE and two WRs stacked tight) creates natural wash blocks and edge leverage, while the offensive line reach blocks down the line to seal the interior and let the perimeter blockers stalk the corner and force defenders. The primary read is the playside edge: the HB should press the toss and then read the flow of the alley defender and corner leverage to decide whether to bounce outside or cut it up through the alley created by the bunch blocks.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre snap, if they are crashing hard inside the pitch will hit the alley clean and you need to fit the force defender fast. Key the cornerback on the bunch side, if he is playing a hard press or squat technique he can blow up the perimeter blocking scheme and force the HB back inside. Identify the safety rotation before the snap, single high shells with the strong safety flying down to the box are the biggest threat to close the alley before the HB turns the corner. User the playside linebacker or safety and attack downhill immediately at the snap, quick pitch dies against disciplined edge defenders who stay square and do not bite on the toss action. Overload or nano blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can beat this play before the blocks set up, so respect wide alignment from a blitzing corner or slot defender.
Usage Tips
Use this in run heavy down and distance spots like 2nd and short or 1st and 10 when the defense is showing base personnel with linebackers at normal depth.
Check the alignment of the bunch side defenders pre snap, if the corner and force player are sitting wide and squeezed down you have a clean bounce lane outside.
Motion is not needed here since the bunch formation already creates natural blocking angles, so use your pre snap window to identify the Mike linebacker and confirm run fits instead.
Pair this with HB Slash Fk End Arnd or Pitch WR Reverse from the same set to keep defenses honest on edge contain, since both plays sell similar outside action but attack the backside.
Against aggressive fast flow defenses that crash down hard on run reads, this quick pitch timing punishes overpursuit if you get skinny with the HB and press the sideline immediately.
