Counter Y out of Singleback Bunch is a power run play that pulls the backside linemen to lead the HB through the playside gap, using the Y (TE) as a key blocker in the counter action. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step away from the play call before pressing back downhill behind the pulling linemen, while the lone isolated WR runs a vertical go route to hold the deep defender and remove a potential run-support defender from the box. This is a gap scheme run play, not a pass concept, so there is no route progression to read: the primary read is the frontside double team and the pulling guard/tackle, with the ball carrier reading the kickout block and the linebacker flow before deciding to cut inside or bounce outside.
Watch for defensive ends or outside linebackers crashing hard down the line, since disciplined edge defenders who stay home can blow up the counter before the puller reaches the point of attack. Key the play-side linebacker depth pre-snap: linebackers stacked tight to the box with fast downhill triggers can beat the pulling linemen to the hole if they diagnose counter quickly. Identify one-high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) as a green light for this run, since it usually signals an extra run defender is out of position or occupied by the vertical WR route. Look for a user-controlled linebacker spying the backfield or sitting in the A or B gap, as an aggressive user blitz through the counter's backside gap can beat the pulling guard before he gets set. Against Cover 4 or two-high safety looks with safeties triggering downhill fast, expect quicker fills that force the ball carrier to cut back immediately rather than bounce outside.
Use this play when the defense shows a light box (six or fewer defenders) since the counter blocking scheme can seal off two extra gaps with the pulling linemen.
Check the isolated WR side pre-snap: if the corner is playing off man or a deep zone shell, the go route can hold that defender out of the run fit, so avoid motioning him into the formation.
Manually control the pulling guard or lead blocker after the snap so you can adjust the kickout block against a hard-scraping linebacker or edge defender who is reading counter aggressively.
Pair this with HB Slam or Inside Zone Split earlier in a drive to establish downhill run tendencies, then hit Counter Y once the defense starts flowing fast to the initial mesh point.
Best called on early downs (first or second and medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Boot or PA Cross Switch off the same backfield action.
