Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is an inside zone weak run out of Singleback Bunch 11 personnel, sending the flow of the offensive line and TE to the weak side away from the bunch tight end alignment. The HB takes the handoff and reads the zone blocking track, pressing the weak side gap before deciding to bounce outside or bang it inside based on the first down lineman and the play side linebacker flow. This is a run play designed to stress gap integrity and force linebackers to shed blocks quickly, with the primary read progression being the weak side double team and then the backside cutback lane if the front overpumps toward the bunch.

Defensive Reads

Check the defensive line shade before the snap, a 4-3 or 3-4 base front with even gap spacing on the weak side is the ideal matchup for this run. Look for overloaded fronts stacked toward the bunch formation, this often leaves the weak side light and creates the cutback opportunity this play is designed around. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they get skinny down the line and stay square without crashing, the bounce outside is there. Beware of a Mike linebacker with a fast downhill trigger or a defense showing run blitz pre-snap, both of these can blow up the zone track before the double team is set. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated deep signals a light box, which is a green light to run this play since there is minimal extra run support underneath.

Usage Tips

Attack fronts that are shaded toward the bunch side pre-snap since the zone flow hits away from that numbers advantage and exploits light boxes on the weak side.

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage this play gets clogged, so check for a light box with linebackers at depth or blitzing off target.

Use the cutback lane against aggressive fronts that crash hard to the play side, patience on the stick is key so do not rush the read before the double team develops.

Pair this with HB Slam and HB Dive from the same set to keep the defense guessing between weak zone and quick hitting interior runs, this forces linebackers to stay honest on their gap fits.

Best deployed on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to run base fronts instead of nickel or dime sub packages that load the box.
