PA Pin Deep is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Bunch that sells the run fake before releasing three routes into a vertical stretch. The bunch alignment sends one receiver on a deep corner route toward the opposite sideline, another on a deep crosser that clears out underneath, and the third on a shallow drag that settles into the void left by the play fake, while the running back checks down into the flat off the play-action mesh point. This is a man beater designed to punish aggressive linebacker run fits and isolate the corner route against outside leverage, with the deep corner as the primary read, the crosser as the secondary window against zone drops, and the flat check as the safety valve.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage on the boundary since a shaded corner or safety rotation toward the bunch signals help over the top on the deep corner route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers who step up on the run fake leave the crosser and flat routes wide open underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability since the deep corner route wins one-on-one against trailing defenders. Zone coverage with a deep half safety shell is the best counter since it takes away the corner route and forces the quarterback into the shorter crosser or flat check down. User the deep defender toward the corner route if you suspect play-action and jump the route early, but stay disciplined against the flat route since quarterbacks will check it down against pressure.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short when the defense is keyed to stop the run, since the play fake needs linebackers to bite for the crosser and flat routes to open up. Check the safety alignment before the snap: a single high safety rotating late suggests man coverage underneath, which favors throwing the deep corner route on time. Motion or shift the bunch to identify if the defense is playing man match, since a defender following the shift confirms man coverage and green lights the outside corner route. Hot route the flat route to a quick out if you see a blitz coming off the edge, giving the quarterback a fast release valve against pressure. Pair this with HB Slam or Duo earlier in a series to establish the run threat, then hit PA Pin Deep once linebackers start crashing downhill on early down runs.
