PA Boot Over is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Bunch 11 personnel that pulls the quarterback to the right off a run fake, giving him a rollout pocket with the offensive line sliding to sell run. From the bunch, one receiver runs a deep corner route from the outside, a second bunch receiver runs a whip/pivot route working back underneath to the flat area, and the backside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking outside near the sideline. The read progression starts with the underneath whip route as the boot flat option, then climbs to the deep corner if the flat is taken away, with the backside comeback as a late-window checkdown against soft coverage or if the rollout buys extra time.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake, the underneath whip route and rollout throwing lanes open up immediately. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, two high shells favor the deep corner route since there is more time in the rollout. Key the flat defender or cornerback assigned to the bunch side, if he sinks into a zone drop rather than sitting on the pivot, throw the whip route quickly. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the rollout lane, aggressive edge blitzes or contain rushes can collapse the pocket before routes develop. This play struggles against a well disciplined Tampa 2 or cover 3 buzz look where the middle linebacker sinks under the corner route while the flat stays covered.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or in play-action friendly situations like 2nd and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense is loaded up front expecting run, this boot action punishes overaggressive linebacker flow.
Use the whip route as your first read against man coverage since the pivot creates natural separation from trailing defenders.
If you see two deep safeties, look to the deep corner route since the rollout gives extra time for it to develop against split safety shells.
Pair this with a hard play action or inside zone run play earlier in a series so the linebacker keys start biting on run action, making the boot fake more effective.
Combine with PA Boot and PA Boot Slide in the same set to keep defenses guessing on rollout direction and route combination.
