PA Cross Switch is a play-action pass out of Singleback Bunch that sells a run fake before releasing a switch release crossing combo from the bunch alignment. The switch release manipulates man defenders by having receivers exchange initial paths, creating natural rubs that beat press and tight man coverage, while the deep crosser also gives you a window against zone shells if linebackers overrun the play fake. Primary read starts with the crossing route working from the bunch side across the field, then progresses to the underneath flat or drag option if the linebackers sink deep with the play-action boot, and finally to any backside comeback or dig if the defense sits on the cross.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify press man on the bunch receivers since the switch release is designed specifically to rub and beat tight man coverage at the line. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they bite hard on the run fake, the shallow cross will be wide open in the vacated middle void. Post-snap, track any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since a disciplined user can jump the crossing route and undercut it for a pick six. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with sound zone drops can shut this down by having a linebacker or nickel defender sit directly in the crosser's path, forcing you to check down to the flat option. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action boot fake needs time to develop and a fast interior blitz can collapse the pocket before the crosser clears the middle of the field.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties honest.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: two high safeties with a soft shell mean you should trust the crosser sitting down in the void, while a single high safety means the switch release man beater is your go to versus press man.
Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper comeback or curl if you see Cover 3 buzz rotation, since the underneath zone defenders will crowd the shallow crosser.
Pair this play in sequence with HB Slam or Duo out of the same Bunch look so the defense keys run action first, then hit them with PA Cross Switch once they start crashing linebackers downhill.
Use PA Boot or PA Boot Slide from the same set as a follow up call to punish defenses that start sitting on the crosser after seeing PA Cross Switch once or twice, keeping the play-action tree unpredictable.
