Mtn QB Blast is a designed QB run out of Shotgun U Off Trips that uses pre-snap motion to shift the formation and get numbers to the play side. The offensive line down blocks and climbs to seal the interior, with the QB reading the leverage of the defensive front before hitting the blast lane between the guard and center. This is a downhill run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the initial dive gap and whether it stays open or bounces off the down blocks.
Key the motion defender first, if a linebacker or slot corner follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and often signals a lighter box for the QB run. Watch the defensive line alignment pre-snap, a 4 or 5 man front with gap fits set will clog the blast lane faster than a light 3 man front. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker's first step, if he steps up to fill quickly the QB run has no room and should be checked out of at the line if possible. This play struggles against inside blitzes and run commit fronts where the defense sends extra defenders into the box pre-snap, since the blast lane gets collapsed before the QB can decide. It beats defenses that are soft in the box or playing coverage shells that pull linebackers out wide to respect trips formations, leaving the interior thin for the designed QB run.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since a defender following the motion man across the formation tips man coverage and confirms the run lane will have one less body to account for. Call this on early downs or short yardage (3rd and 1 to 3) when the defense is showing a light box or has backed off to respect play-action. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are crashed downhill anticipating run blitz, consider hitting the QB run lane quickly before flow arrives. Pair this with PA Jet Sweep or Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect the same motion action both as a run fake and an actual handoff, creating hesitation in the second level. Mix in HB Power or Counter Y from this set to keep the same run action alive while varying who actually carries the ball, forcing linebackers to stay honest on run fits.
