Breakdown

Strong Flood is a three level flood concept run to the trips side out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex with 11 personnel. The backside X runs a deep dig across the field while the trips side stacks a corner route from the outside receiver, an out route from the slot at intermediate depth, and a flat/wheel route from the third receiver near the line, creating a high low low flood to one side of the field. The running back releases into a shallow crossing route out of the backfield as a checkdown, and the play is a clear zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 by stretching one deflector defender vertically, horizontally and underneath at the same time. Primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the intermediate out, and finishes with the flat route or the RB check down underneath.

Defensive Reads

Look for a single high safety pre snap, that alignment usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this flood is designed to stress on the trips side. Watch the flat to curl linebacker or nickel defender after the snap, his drop angle tells you whether the corner route or the underneath out and flat combo will be open. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the deep third or playing lurk technique underneath the corner route, that is the primary way this concept gets shut down. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, the corner route will likely be capped, so shift the progression down to the out route and flat combination earlier in the read. If the defense shows man pressure with blitzers crashing the backfield, get the ball out on the flat route or the RB crossing route quickly before the protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Diagnose the safety shell before the snap, if you see a single high safety with corners playing off you are looking at Cover 3 and this play is designed to punish it immediately.

Key the flat defender or curl to flat player post snap, if he sits on the flat route the corner route will be wide open behind him, if he bails deep the out and flat combo will have room underneath.

Use the RB crossing route as your outlet against blitz heavy fronts since it gets vacated quickly and provides a safety valve against man pressure.

Pair this call with Strong Flood X Cross or PA Switch Dig in the same set so the defense cannot key the trips flood look based on the backside X route alone.

Best used on second and medium or third and long when defenses lean on zone drops, since man coverage with no help over the top can lock down the corner route.
