Breakdown

Dagger out of Shotgun Trey Offset (11 personnel) stacks a deep dig from the inline receiver behind a clear-out vertical from the slot, while the outside X runs an in-cut and the flexed TE runs a shallow crosser underneath. The RB releases to the flat as a checkdown/outlet, giving this concept layered depth at all three levels to attack both man and zone coverage. Primary read is the vertical clear-out first to see if it pulls the safety, then the dig sitting down in the void, working down to the flat/checkdown against a hard blitz or if the middle is capped.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the two-way go: if the offense clears out the vertical route without a safety over the top, you are likely in a single high shell that is vulnerable to the dig. User your deep safety to sink into the throwing lane where the dig settles rather than staying attached to the vertical route, since that window is the primary target. Linebackers need to widen with the shallow crosser underneath but stay alert for the RB releasing to the flat, since both routes attack the same underneath zone. A disguised Cover 2 with a hard-charging slot defender or a nano blitz through the A-gap can disrupt the quarterback's timing before the dig comes open, since this route takes time to develop. Press coverage on the outside in man beats the concept early by disrupting the release of the vertical route, which removes the clear-out and lets a robber defender sit on the dig.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: two high shells with soft corners are ideal since the vertical will occupy one safety and open the dig behind it. Motion or shift the RB to confirm man versus zone before the snap if your set allows it, since a defender following him into the backfield tips man coverage. If you see Cover 3 with a single high safety, hold the dig read a beat longer since the flat defender will widen for the crosser and create a bigger throwing window over the middle. Against Cover 2, throw the dig with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top since that seam closes fast. Pair this play with Verticals Y Drag or Shot Slot Post from the same set to keep the defense honest on the deep middle and force them to respect the vertical stem every snap. Use Dagger on second and medium to second and long where defenses often sit in zone shells expecting a quicker route concept.
