Read Option out of Shotgun Trey Offset is a true zone read run play with the QB and HB mesh point set just behind the line. The three WRs stacked to the offset side stay static as decoy alignment while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to decide between keeping the ball on a give to the HB up the middle or pulling it and bouncing outside himself. This is a run play designed to punish aggressive edge defenders and gap-crashing linebackers, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is simply the mesh read on the play side defensive end.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side defensive end pre-snap: if he is crashing hard down the line on every snap, expect the QB to pull and bounce outside. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who fill fast will stop the dive but open up cutback lanes for a QB keeper. User the play side end or a spy linebacker manually to take away the option read entirely, forcing a predictable give. Beware of contain-based fronts and scrape exchange linebacker calls, which are specifically designed to shut down zone read by having a second defender account for the QB. If the offense keeps calling this concept, jump the mesh point with an aggressive DL slant or blitz timed to the snap to blow up the read before it develops.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the defensive end into declaring his gap before the snap so your read is easier to diagnose in real time.
Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the play side end is left unblocked, since that is exactly who you are reading on the mesh.
If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more defenders crowding the line, consider audibling to RPO Zone Alert WR Screen or RPO Alert Screen to get the ball out to the perimeter instead of forcing the run.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Outside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense has to respect multiple gap threats, making the zone read hit harder on second or third viewing.
Best called on 1st or 2nd and short to medium distance where defenders are more likely to sell out on run fits and give you a clean edge read.
