Shot Slot Post is a shot play out of Shotgun Trey Offset built around a slot receiver breaking hard into the post as the primary route, with the rest of the concept clearing out underneath and deep to create a one on one throwing lane. It is a pure man beater designed to punish inside leverage or trail technique on the slot defender, though it also works against single high shells that vacate the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the post, and if that window is closed the quarterback works to the underneath checkdown or secondary route on the backside before extending the play.
Defensive Reads
Identify the free safety pre-snap, if he is aligned in the middle of the field in a single high shot you have a green light on the post. Watch the corner over the slot receiver, outside leverage or press man means the post should win immediately off the release. Post snap, track the middle linebacker or hook defender for a lurk threat sitting under the post, if he sinks deep into that throwing lane hold the ball and reset to the checkdown. Two high safety shells with the safeties staying deep will squeeze the throwing window, so expect to check down rather than force the post into a bracket. Be alert for a nano blitz or interior pressure package, since the post takes time to develop and a fast collapsing pocket forces an early or inaccurate throw.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, look for single high safety alignment with the corner playing outside leverage on the slot receiver, that tells you the post window will be open. Motion the slot or use a hot route to adjust the depth of the post if you see a robber or bracket coverage sitting inside. This play hits best on second and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to play zone drops or single high man rather than heavy pattern match. Pair it in your play calling sequence with RPO Alert Screen or RPO Zone Alert WR Screen from the same set so the defense has to respect the quick game before you hit them with the shot play. Use a hard count or shift to bait the safety into rotating early, then throw the post before the deep defender can recover.
