TE In out of Trey Offset Shotgun sends the three receivers to the trips side vertical with the outside two pushing straight up the seam and the boundary receiver breaking outside on an out cut near the sideline. The tight end runs a shallow in route underneath, sitting down over the middle after crossing the formation, while the backside receiver on the two-man side runs a deep in that crosses the field behind the linebackers. This is a zone beater built to attack the middle void created by the vertical clear out, with the primary read starting on the crossing in route from the backside single receiver and working down to the TE's shallow in as the check down against underneath zone drops.
Check pre-snap safety depth, since two high shells with soft zone underneath are the biggest vulnerability for this concept. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the middle zone they can jump both the TE In and the deep in route from the backside receiver. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets stressed by the trips side verticals clearing out space for the in routes to break open. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, since that is the exact area both in routes are designed to attack. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers without accounting for the shallow crosser can be exploited quickly if the TE In route is open immediately off the snap.
Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, since this concept thrives against zone shells with soft underneath coverage.
If the backside in route is covered by a sitting linebacker, hot route the TE In to a flat or drag to create separation against man coverage.
Use the three verticals on the trips side to hold safeties deep and open the middle of the field for the crossing in routes.
Best called on second or third and medium situations where you need the intermediate in routes to pick up chunk yardage against zone drops.
Pair this play with Verticals Y Drag or Dagger from the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and underneath crossers off similar formation looks.
