HB Counter out of Shotgun Trey Offset is a power run play built around misdirection and a pulling guard scheme. Defensive Reads
Key the backside defensive end and outside linebacker first, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the counter step can blow up the pulling guard's angle. Watch for linebackers who diagnose the counter step quickly and flow downhill rather than biting on the initial play side action, which shuts down the cutback lane. Identify whether the defense is in a one high or two high safety shell pre-snap, since a single high safety often means the box is loaded and the counter has less room to break outside. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker's gap fit against the pulling guard's kick out or lead block, because a user-controlled defender flowing to the mesh point can jump the counter before the hole develops. Look for a defensive tackle who consistently shoots the gap left vacated by the down blocks, since a quick penetrating three technique can disrupt the timing of the pulling guard before he reaches the point of attack.
Usage Tips
Run this play when the defense shows a fast-flowing front or edge defenders who consistently crash upfield on the snap, since the counter action punishes overpursuit.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing before the ball is snapped, which widens the cutback lane for the HB.
Stick to early down and manageable distance situations like first or second down to keep defenses honest and avoid predictable long yardage passing downs.
