Stick out of Shotgun Trey Offset shows a classic Stick concept to the trips side: the outside receiver runs a quick out toward the sideline, the inner slot receiver sits down on a stick route breaking outside at a shallow depth, and the third trips receiver releases vertically up the seam. Away from the formation, the backside single receiver runs a deep vertical to hold the safety and cornerback over the top. This is a man beater and zone beater combo play designed for quick, high percentage throws, with the primary progression starting at the stick route in the flat, working to the seam route, and using the backside vertical as a hold or shot play if the defense sells out on the underneath routes.
Key the flat defender or curl to flat defender pre-snap; if they widen with the outside out route, the stick route sitting underneath becomes wide open. Watch for a hard press corner on the backside single receiver, this signals man coverage and opens the seam route against a linebacker in coverage. Identify user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, since a smart user can jump the stick route and bait a quarterback throw into a jump ball situation. Read linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers will collision the seam route while deep dropping linebackers open the stick route sooner. Beware of Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 match shells that can double the trips side, since they can take away both the stick and seam reads and force a check down or scramble.
Pre-snap, check for two high safeties versus single high; against single high the backside vertical becomes a legitimate shot play if the corner presses without safety help over the top.
Use the stick route as your first read against any zone shell since it settles into the void between the flat defender and the underneath linebacker.
Against man coverage, hot route the outside out route into a quick slant or speed out if the corner is playing tight man to create instant separation.
Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert Stick and RPO Alert Screen in the same set so the defense cannot sit on the stick concept without opening up run lanes.
Best called on third and short to third and medium since the stick route and seam combo give you multiple high percentage completion windows underneath sticks and coverage.
