Outside Zone from Shotgun Trey Offset is a pure zone run play designed to get the ball carrier working laterally before finding a crease. The diagram shows a Trey bunch to one side with three receivers stacked wide while the offensive line flows in unison toward the play side, with the HB taking a lateral path behind the QB before cutting upfield off his blockers' leverage. There is no route combo or play-action element here, this is a zone blocking scheme run play with the primary read being the HB's aiming point: bounce outside if the edge is sealed, or cut inside off the first natural crease created by the double team and reach blocks.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and flow pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow and crashing hard to the play side call, this run can get cut back against overpursuit. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, a hard crash inside opens the bounce lane while a wide alignment invites the cutback. Beware of a Sam or Will linebacker sitting in a run fit gap unblocked, that is the primary defender who can blow this play up if the offensive line loses the reach block. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, an eighth defender crashing down signals run blitz and should trigger a check to a pass play from this set like RPO Alert Screen or Stick. Man coverage on the perimeter with off leverage corners tends to bite hard on this run action, use that tendency to set up later play-action shots like PA Post Shot or PA Cross Switch from the same formation.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes pre-snap, if the defense shows six or fewer in the box this play hits quickly off the edge before flow catches up.
Use the HB's zone read logic to your advantage, patiently let the blocking flow develop instead of forcing an early cut, this play rewards one cut and go decisiveness.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run fits, the similar backfield action makes it hard for defenders to diagnose direction.
Against aggressive edge defenders or run blitzes, motion or shift the Trey bunch pre-snap to check the numbers and force a defensive adjustment before the snap.
On early downs in normal personnel matchups this play is best used to stay ahead of the count, avoid calling it into stacked eight man boxes since the zone blocking cannot consistently win those reps.
