Spot Smash out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE lines up two receivers to the boundary and a bunched trio to the field side. The boundary side runs a classic smash concept with the outside receiver clearing deep on a corner route while the inside slot sits down on a quick out, stretching any deep half defender vertically and horizontally. To the field side the diagram shows a corner route from the TE attacking the flat, a deep flag route climbing the sideline, and an inside receiver settling into a spot route underneath, creating a high low read on that side while the flat defender gets occupied. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by putting two defenders in conflict on both sides of the formation, with the primary read starting on the smash side flat to corner combo before working back to the spot route if the field side low defender widens.
Defensive Reads
Identify two high safeties pre-snap since Cover 2 shells struggle to cover both the flat to corner smash concept and the field side flag route without help. Watch the flat defender on the smash side, if he squats on the underneath out route the corner route behind him is live for a big play over the top. Key the field side linebacker or nickel defender in zone drops, if he carries the spot route too far outside it opens a throwing lane underneath for the sitting receiver. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or quarters shells with strong safety help since the corner routes on both sides run into extra defenders sinking deep. User a rat in the middle of the field lurking underneath to jump the spot route and disrupt the primary checkdown read, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and throw into tighter coverage on the boundary corner.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties since this concept is built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with the smash side flat and corner combo. If the corner sits low on the outside receiver, hot route that boundary out to a quick hitch to beat aggressive flat corners in press coverage. On third and medium, trust the spot route underneath as your safety valve since it settles into soft zones between the linebackers and the deep coverage. Pair this play with Rams Y Out or Slot Outs earlier in a drive to condition the defense to jump underneath routes, then come back to Spot Smash to hit the corner route over the top for explosive gains. Against Cover 3, key the flat defender on the field side and if he widens with the corner route, the spot route sitting down behind him becomes wide open for an easy completion.
