HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE is a classic screen pass designed to slow down aggressive pass rushes and blitz-heavy defenses. The diagram shows both outside receivers pushing vertical up the field to clear out cornerbacks and hold deep defenders, while the offensive line releases to set up a wall of blockers in front of the HB. The RB slips out to the flat behind that developing wall, and the TE runs an inside cross underneath to help occupy linebackers before the ball gets to the back. The primary read is simply getting the ball to the HB once the screen develops, using the outside vertical routes as clear-out concepts to hold defenders in coverage away from the screen lane.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, look for defenses showing man coverage with cornerbacks pressed on the outside receivers, since the vertical clear-out routes are designed to pull those corners away from the screen lane. Watch linebacker depth and blitz indicators, this play is built to counter nano blitzes and edge pressure packages that leave the middle of the field vacant. Post-snap, the biggest threat to this concept is a user-controlled linebacker sitting flat or spying the HB instead of rushing, since that defender can blow up the screen before blockers get set. Zone defenses with disciplined linebackers who stay in their drops rather than crashing the pocket will shut this down quickly. Keying the defensive end and outside linebacker crash on the snap tells you whether the screen has a lane, if they stay home the play should be checked down or bailed on entirely.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see pre-snap indicators of a blitz such as linebackers creeping to the line or a safety rotating down into the box. Use it on early downs or third and short to punish overaggressive pass rush tendencies without risking a sack. Get the ball out quickly to the HB as soon as the offensive line establishes the wall, do not hold the ball waiting for routes to develop since this is a timing based screen. Pair this play with HB Draw and Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenses honest against the run, then hit them with the screen when they start selling out on run fits or edge blitzes. Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at home, since screen plays get sniffed out easily by users spying the backfield.
