Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE lines up with a tight trips look to the boundary and a single receiver running a deep vertical to the field side. Underneath, two crossing routes create the classic mesh at the line, one receiver settles into a spot route just past the mesh point, and a shallow drag clears out to the opposite flat while the field side X runs a vertical/go route to stretch the defense deep. This is a versatile man beater that also stresses zone thanks to the natural pick action of the mesh and the spot sitting in soft zone windows, with the primary read progression starting at the spot route, then working to the mesh crosser, then checking down to the shallow drag before looking up the vertical shot on the outside.
Defensive Reads
Watch for user controlled linebackers sitting in the mesh area, since a good defender can rob the crossing routes and blow up this concept before it develops. Cover 3 zone defenses with sped up flat defenders can squeeze the spot route window, so identify if the flat defender is cheating inside before relying on that read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell to beat, since the natural mesh traffic forces defenders to fight through picks and often creates a step of separation. Blitz heavy Cover 0 looks can be exposed by the deep vertical route on the outside, but only if the offensive line picks up the rush cleanly, so respect edge pressure off the tight offset TE side. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow, aggressive drops from Mike or Will linebackers signal they are keying the mesh crossers and will undercut the shallow drag route.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like press corners and locked up linebackers since the mesh traffic naturally creates rub separation against man defenders.
If you see a single high safety or Cover 3 shell, hot route the spot route to sit in the soft zone between the underneath and deep third defenders for an easy conversion.
Use the deep vertical route as a clock read against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks, since a busted man matchup on that route can result in an explosive play.
Sequence this play with Spot Smash or Mills Slot Out earlier in a series to set up defenders expecting shallow crossers, then hit the mesh spot concept when they start jumping underneath routes.
This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the mesh crossers and spot route are high percentage completions that live in the 5 to 10 yard range.
