Slot Outs from Shotgun Tight Offset TE aligns two receivers to the left and a bunched trio to the right, with the outside left receiver running a deep vertical and the inside left receiver breaking on a quick out route toward the sideline. On the right side, the play shows a vertical seam from the slot, a corner route breaking outward from the outside receiver, and a short out from the inside receiver near the line, creating a natural high low stretch on that side. This is primarily a zone beater built to attack curl to flat and hook zone defenders with the two low out routes clearing space underneath while the verticals hold safeties deep, and the primary read progression starts with the left out route, moves to the right side out or seam depending on the linebacker drop, and finishes with the corner route if the defense rolls coverage away from the flats.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check safety depth and shell shape since a two high shell signals more space for the corner route and seam, while a single high shell tells you to expect help over the top on verticals. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into hook zones the out routes will be open in the flat, if they stay shallow the underneath throws get contested quickly. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can take away both out routes, so be ready to climb the progression to the seam or corner route against that shell. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle are the biggest threat to the crossing timing of this concept, so track the user reticle before committing to the right side out. Man coverage with press corners invites a hot route to slants or a shot to the vertical on the left, since the out breaks lose value when the defender has outside leverage and no zone help.
Usage Tips
Look for the left slot out route first on quick three step timing, it is the fastest developing throw and works well against off man or soft zone corners.
If the defense shows two deep safeties pre snap, expect the corner route on the right to have room to work against a single high rotation, so keep that as your number two read.
Use the flat routes as hot route conversions to slants if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since the out breaks can get jumped by aggressive user controlled corners playing outside leverage.
Pair this play with Rams Y Out or WR Stick N Out earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on out routes, then hit Slot Wheel or PA Seams off similar formation motion to punish overplayed flat defenders.
Best used on second and medium to third and short situations where the quick out timing routes give you a high floor completion while the verticals keep safeties honest.
