Stick out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE with 11 personnel shows both outside receivers running deep corner routes toward the sideline while the two inside receivers push vertical seams up the middle of the field. This is a classic zone beater built to attack the flat to corner window and stress hook zone defenders with the seam routes crossing underneath. Primary read progression starts with the vertical seam route for a quick answer against zone drops, then works out to the corner route on the boundary if the flat defender jumps the underneath throw.
Defensive Reads
Watch for Cover 3 shells where the corner routes get taken away by deep thirds, forcing the quarterback to live on the seam routes underneath. Cover 2 with aggressive flat defenders can jump the corner route, so user your safety over the top to close the window on the outside break. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the seam runner is a green light for the offense since the seam route wins leverage against slower defenders. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge remove flat defenders, which opens the corner route for an explosive gain if the quarterback gets time. Zone drops with linebackers sitting too shallow leave the seam routes uncovered, so lurk with a user defender at the second level to jump the quick throw.
Usage Tips
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defenders and hook defenders before the snap since this play lives on reading how those zone defenders react to the seam versus corner combo.
Use this on third and short to medium since the seam route sits in the void underneath zone coverage for an easy conversion.
Hot route the inside seam runner into a quick out if you see Cover 2 with a hard flat defender sitting on the corner route.
Pair this with Rams Y Out or Slot Outs in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot key on the seam read every snap.
Against man coverage look immediately to the corner route since the seam runners can get picked off by underneath linebackers in man drops.
