WR Stick N Out is a quick-hitting stick concept out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE with 11 personnel. The backside X runs a deep drag across the field while the TE runs a quick out to the flat, the slot runs a stick out breaking to the sideline at the sticks, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline. This is a man beater built around the stick concept: the quick out and stick combo attack off man leverage while the wheel route from the backfield is designed to exploit linebackers or nickel defenders who cannot stay on top of a releasing back. Primary read progression starts with the stick to out combo on the play side, then works to the HB wheel if the underneath defenders sink or if a linebacker tries to jump the flat route, with the deep drag as a late-window checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Read the alignment of the slot defender pre-snap, since a defender playing outside leverage on the stick route signals man coverage and opens the door for the out route to break open underneath. Watch the linebacker responsible for the HB out of the backfield, if he widens too early or bites on the flat route the wheel will be wide open behind him. Zone shells with two deep safeties tend to shut this down quickly because the flat and out routes sit in the same horizontal window, allowing a zone defender to sit on both. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking near the stick route, since aggressive human players will often jump this route expecting the quick throw, which opens the deep drag or wheel route behind them. Blitz-heavy fronts can rush this play because the quick stick and out combo gets the ball out fast, but if the offensive line is beat on the backside the QB may not have time to progress to the wheel route read.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since this concept leans heavily on beating man coverage with the stick and out combo. If you see a single high safety and man alignment on the outside, prioritize the HB wheel route matchup against a linebacker for a big play opportunity. Against zone shells, work the stick to out combo quickly since the flat and quick out create natural picks against zone drops, and check down to the deep drag if the underneath zone squeezes. This play works best on third and short to medium situations where the stick concept can pick up quick yardage or the wheel can hit for an explosive gain if the defense bites on the shorter routes. Pair this play with Stick or Mesh Spot from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game and combo route concepts, then hit HB Slip Screen or HB Draw if the defense starts jumping the stick routes aggressively.
