Breakdown

Inside Zone from Shotgun Tight Offset TE is a base zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and a tight end offset to one side. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading down blocks and combo blocks at the point of attack while the fullback or offset TE seals the edge, giving the back a one cut and go path between the tackles. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the play side double team into the linebacker level, letting the HB press the hole and cut backside if the front slants hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch the Mike and Will linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow at four yards or less they are likely keying run and will fill fast. A 4-3 Under or 46 front with extra defenders stacked in the box is the biggest threat since it clogs both zone lanes immediately. Man coverage on the perimeter with only two deep safeties usually leaves light boxes, which is when this play hits hardest. Post snap, key the play side defensive tackle, if he gets skinny into the backside gap the cutback lane opens for a user controlled defender to overpursue. Beware of a linebacker blitzing through the A or B gap pre-snap disguised as a blitz package, since inside zone has no answer once the double team collapses before the back can press the hole.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker depth to confirm he is not stacked in the A gap ready to shoot a nano blitz. This play thrives against odd fronts and light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, so check the defender count before the snap. If the defense shows a heavy front with both DTs shaded to one gap, hot route the TE to a chip and release to add a lead blocker on the backside cut. Pair this with HB Counter and HB Draw out of the same personnel to keep defenders honest on run fits without changing your formation tell. On early downs, run this to set up PA Seams or Slot Wheel later in the drive once linebackers start cheating up on run action.
