0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Tight Offset TE is a gap scheme run play built to attack the interior with a trapping lineman. The play art shows the HB running downhill through the middle of the formation while the offensive line pulls a blocker across the formation to trap the first defender inside the tackle box, letting the natural blitzer's aggression work against him. With four receivers stemming vertically off the snap (two to each side), the defense has to respect play-action elements and cannot immediately crash extra defenders down into the box. The primary read is the trap blocker's kick out on the down lineman, then the HB presses the hole and reads the fullback/pulling blocker's block to decide whether to cut backside or stay on track.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive tackle alignment pre-snap. A shaded nose or 3-technique crashing hard down the line is the exact trap bait this play is designed to punish. Key the Mike and Will linebackers for run blitz indicators. Fast downhill flow from either linebacker means the trap block will spring the HB into the second level cleanly. Man coverage looks with corners pressed and no extra safety in the box are ideal since the underneath defenders are occupied with the vertical route stems and cannot help in run support. Zone coverage shells with a safety sitting close to the line (run support safety) can shut this down quickly, since he becomes a free hitter if the trap block whiffs. Be wary of defensive line games or slants away from the trap side. If the DL is stunting instead of firing straight ahead, the pulling blocker can miss his kick out assignment and blow up the play in the backfield.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have positive down and distance and want to stay ahead of the chains.
Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the defense is in an odd front with a heavy nose shade or shows a run blitz with linebackers crashing downhill, the trap block is designed to exploit exactly that aggression.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap read on the Mike linebacker's depth. If he is sitting back in coverage rather than creeping to the line, the trap lane may get clogged, so be ready to bail into a passing concept from this same formation instead.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Counter from the same personnel group so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation alone. Alternating 0 1 Trap with those two keeps linebackers honest and slows their run fits.
Once the defense starts selling hard on run action, use PA Seams or HB Slip Screen out of this identical look to punish overaggressive linebackers and blitzing corners.
