Breakdown

RPO Trap Alert Omaha is a run pass option built off inside trap action with an Omaha alert tag that lets the QB flip the play call pre-snap based on the box count. The blocking scheme pulls a guard to trap the first threat off the edge while the QB reads the play side linebacker or overhang defender to decide between handing off the trap and pulling to throw the alert route. This is primarily a run play with a built in RPO conflict defender read, and it functions as both a light box punisher and a quick answer to overpursuing linebackers, with the primary read progression being box count first, then the flow of the key defender second.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth and flow at the snap, since a downhill blitzing linebacker is exactly what the trap block is designed to seal Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, as single high often leaves the alert route open against man coverage Key the play side defensive end or overhang defender, since squeezing hard inside opens the alert throw and staying wide invites the trap run Watch for a user spy or lurk defender sitting in the RPO throwing lane, which is the biggest counter to this concept in ranked play Look for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading run keys aggressively, since that flow is what makes the trap hit big on the ground

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and use Omaha to flip into the run if you count six or fewer defenders in the box

If a linebacker is crashing hard down the middle or flowing fast to the trap side, pull the ball and hit the alert throw immediately

Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep defenses honest and set up bigger shots later in the drive

Pair this with PA Jet Sweep and RPO Zone Alert Omaha in the same set so the defense cannot key on one specific run action

Against aggressive user linebackers who jump the trap every time, fake the mesh and throw off their aggressiveness for an explosive gain

Stick to standard runs on third and long since the RPO read window shrinks against dime and prevent shells
