Fake Jet HB Seam runs a jet sweep fake to the HB before the QB works a play-action passing concept off the run fake. Post fake, the TE releases up the seam as the primary vertical threat while the two outside receivers to the left run a deep corner/post combo that clears the top of the defense and a comeback that settles underneath, and the far right receiver runs a vertical route to hold the deep defender on that side. This is a play-action seam shot designed to punish teams that bite on the jet motion or sell out against the run, with the seam route as the first read and the deep post as the alert if the defense bites hard on the fake.

Defensive Reads

Key the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they step up to fill run gaps on the jet fake they leave the seam wide open for the TE. Watch the middle of the field safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety who bites on run action gives up the seam and the deep post combo on the left. Identify man coverage by checking if a linebacker or slot defender chases the TE through the seam, this play is built to beat man coverage that overcommits to run support. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in a deep middle zone or lurking the seam, since a disciplined zone defender who reads the play fake correctly can undercut the seam throw. Recognize Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with the safeties staying deep and not biting, this coverage keeps the seam and corner routes covered and forces the QB to check down or scramble.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations where the defense is keying run support because the jet fake sells hardest against aggressive front seven play.

Watch the linebackers and safeties pre-snap, if they crash down or bite on the jet motion the seam route will open up instantly for a big chunk gain.

Hot route the comeback route into a hitch or a deeper dig if you are seeing a lot of zone drop underneath, since the seam and comeback are close together and can get cluttered against zone.

Pair this play with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet in the same drive to condition the defense to respect the jet action, then hit this seam shot once they start jumping the fake.

Avoid calling this against heavy Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties who have not been baited by the run action yet, since the seam window will be tighter without a run fake bite.
