Fake Jet HB Seam runs a jet sweep fake across the backfield to hold linebackers and safeties before working a play-action pass off it. Off the fake, the TE runs a vertical seam up the middle of the field, the outside receiver to that side runs a deep corner route breaking outside, and the two receivers on the opposite side run a deep post and a dig underneath it, creating a natural clear-out for the seam. This is a play-action seam concept built to attack man coverage and single-high shells, with the primary read progression starting on the TE seam, then working to the corner route if the seam is capped, and finally to the backside post/dig combo if the initial reads are covered.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker and safety depth before the snap, since Cover 1 or Cover 3 shells with a single deep safety are the most vulnerable to the TE seam. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hook/curl zone, since a disciplined defender who does not bite on the jet fake can jump the seam route and undercut it for a big hit or interception. If the defense shows two-high safeties pre-snap, expect the seam to be squeezed, so track the post and dig combo on the backside as the likely answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4. Post-snap, identify whether the corner to the seam side sinks into a deep third or stays flat-footed reading run, since a corner biting on the jet action leaves the deep corner route wide open. Be wary of overloaded blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action fake takes extra time to develop and can leave the quarterback exposed if protection is outnumbered.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing with the sweep action, which opens up the TE seam read immediately at the snap.
This play hits hardest against single-high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the seam route splits the difference between the hook zone and the deep third.
If you see two-high safeties pre-snap, be ready to progress quickly to the backside post or dig, since the seam window will be tighter against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Pair this play with PA Jet Sweep or Jet Touch Pass earlier in a series so the defense respects the run action, then dial up Fake Jet HB Seam to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
Best called on early downs (1st or 2nd and medium) when defenses are more likely to sell out on stopping the jet sweep look, giving you a favorable play-action window.
