Curl Flats out of Shotgun Stack Y Off is a quick-hitting zone beater that uses a two-man stack to the left to create natural rub separation. The stacked receivers run a curl and a deep crosser working opposite directions off the same release point, while the backside receiver runs a shallow flat route and the inline receiver on the strong side pushes vertical up the numbers. The primary read progression starts with the flat route as a check against blitz or Cover 0, then works to the curl sitting down in the zone window, and finally to the vertical route on the strong side if the corner bites on shorter routes or the safety rotates away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the stack side since a single high safety often signals man coverage or Cover 3, both of which struggle to cover the stack release cleanly. Watch the flat defender's positioning at the snap because if he sits inside too long, the flat route is an easy pitch and catch against blitz-heavy calls. Post-snap, track the underneath zone defender responsible for the curl window since a hard flat drop leaves the curl wide open, while a delayed drop or a user-controlled defender jumping the route shuts this concept down. Man coverage with no safety help over the top of the vertical strong-side route is the biggest exploit since that receiver can win vertically once the corner is picked by the stack release. Nano blitzes and Cover 0 pressure packages are the main counter to this play since the quick timing routes do not fully neutralize immediate interior pressure.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety look because the curl sits perfectly in the soft spot of Cover 2 and Cover 4 zones. If you see man coverage with no deep help over the stack, hot route the deep crosser into a quick out or slant to speed up the throw and beat the rub artificially. Use this on second and medium or third and short since the flat route gives you a built-in checkdown against pressure looks. Pair this with PA Jet Sweep or Fake Jet HB Seam from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits before coming back to this quick passing concept. Against Cover 3, look to hit the curl route as soon as the underneath zone defender clears his drop since that throwing window closes fast.
