Off the fake, both outside receivers push vertical up the numbers on go routes while the deep crosser cuts across the field over the middle, and the checkdown receiver runs a flat route underneath to the sweep side for an easy outlet. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish aggressive run defense and man coverage that bites on the jet motion, with the primary read progression starting on the deep crosser working from the backside go route in, then working to the flat route if the defense clamps down on the crossing route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety indicates man coverage that this play is designed to exploit with the deep crosser and go routes. Watch linebacker depth and their reaction to the jet motion, because linebackers who crash down hard on the sweep fake open up the crossing route and flat route underneath. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow to intermediate middle of the field, since that defender can jump the deep crosser and blow up the primary read. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and strong lurk technique shuts this down by taking away both the flat and crossing route options, forcing the quarterback into the low percentage go routes. Look for blitz packages that send an extra rusher off the edge on the play-action fake, since the jet motion can leave the backside tackle isolated and vulnerable to a nano blitz timed to the snap.

Pair this play with Inside Zone or the base Jet Sweep run earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the motion as a run threat, which sets up the play-action shot for bigger explosive gains later.

Watch the play clock and snap timing so the jet motion is fully in stride before the snap, since a mistimed motion tips the play and lets defenders sit on the crossing route.
