Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and shell alignment. Two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which puts more emphasis on the deep crosser sitting underneath the safeties. One deep safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, meaning the outside verticals need to win one-on-one against the corners. Key linebacker reaction to the jet motion. If linebackers flow hard to the sweep side pre-snap or immediately at the snap, the deep crosser will cross into wide open space in the vacated middle of the field. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the deep crosser or sitting in a lurk technique in the intermediate zone. A disciplined defender who reads play-action and stays home on that route can jump the primary read and blow up the concept. Man coverage with press corners on the outside verticals is the biggest risk to this play if the corners do not bite on the run fake, since both go routes are contested one-on-one with no natural high-low leverage help. A well-timed edge blitz or contain rush that ignores the jet fake and attacks the quarterback immediately can collapse the pocket before the deep crosser has time to develop, so a quick checkdown to the HB flat route becomes essential against pressure looks.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense has shown run blitz or aggressive linebacker fits on previous jet sweep or Fake Jet HB Seam calls from this set, since the fake plays directly off that tendency.
Watch linebacker depth and edge defender leverage pre-snap. If they crash hard toward the jet motion or sugar the box, the deep crosser will have a clean throwing lane behind them.
Use the deep crosser as your first read versus zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2, since it sits down in the vacated intermediate window created by linebackers flowing to stop the run fake.
Against man coverage, work the two vertical go routes on the perimeter, they are true man beaters if the corners bite on run action and lose a step in transition.
