Post-snap, user a linebacker or slot defender and sit in the throwing lane to the flat rather than biting on the vertical seam routes, this is the number one way to blow up the screen. Watch for a spy or scrape exchange defender who stays home instead of rushing, that defender can read the HB slipping out and jump the throw before blockers get set. Man coverage with blitz packages is vulnerable here because rushers turn their backs to the backfield, but disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers square to the line can sit on the screen. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Tampa 2 with underneath defenders reading quarterback eyes, expect a jump on the flat throw since those linebackers are trained to squat on short routes.
