HB Scissors out of Shotgun Stack Y Off is a route combo concept built around crossing routes that create a scissors effect at the intermediate level, designed to attack man coverage by forcing defenders to fight through traffic. The stacked receiver alignment allows the two routes to cross paths early, generating natural rubs that shake press or trail technique defenders, while the HB stays in to check release or leaks out to the flat as a late-arriving safety valve. The primary read progression starts with the crossing route breaking toward the middle of the field, moves to the corresponding scissor route heading the opposite direction, and finishes with the HB check down if both crossers are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for corners playing inside shade on the stacked receivers pre-snap, since that alignment signals zone drop responsibility and will collapse the crossing routes into traffic. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, because a shallow drop into the crossing lanes means the defense is sitting on this exact concept and you should check down to the HB immediately. Man coverage with a single high safety is the ideal shell for this play since the crossers create natural separation through traffic and the safety cannot help over the top on both routes at once. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since a smart user player will jump the crossing routes and bait you into a costly interception. Cover 3 with aggressive underneath zone drops and blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will disrupt the timing of the scissor routes, so check hot routes into quicker breaking routes when facing a heavy pressure look.

Usage Tips

Look at the stacked receiver pre-snap and identify whether the defense is showing man or zone via the corner alignment on that stack, since a defender playing outside leverage on the stack is a strong indicator of man coverage that this play exploits. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz intent before the snap so you know if you need to check the HB into a quick release or keep him in to block. Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag if you diagnose zone coverage, since the natural crossers can get muddied in a zone drop and you want an outlet that clears underneath linebackers. This play pairs well with RPO Alert Out and RPO Zone Alert Omaha in the same set since both threaten the same crossing lanes and force linebackers to respect run fits before the crossers develop. Save HB Scissors for third and medium or second and long situations where the intermediate crossing routes have room to develop before the sticks, and pair it with Curl Flats on the following play call to keep defenders guessing between shallow and intermediate concepts.
