RPO Alert Out is a run pass option out of Shotgun Stack Y Off with 11 personnel that reads the box defender alignment to decide between the give and the alert throw. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a quick out breaking hard to the sideline as the alert route while the backfield shows an inside run action with the offensive line covering up the interior gaps. The primary read progression is pre snap numbers in the box first, then the alert defender key at the snap: if that defender crashes down on the run flow, pull and fire the out route immediately, if he sits or widens, hand the ball off and let the run hit downhill.
Watch the alignment of the flat defender or corner over the alert receiver before the snap to anticipate whether the QB will pull and throw. If the defense shows a hard run blitz or crashes an extra man into the box, expect the QB to pull and hit the out route quickly. Soft zone shells with the corner sitting off can bait the QB into throwing the out into a trap, so user that flat defender to jump the route. Man coverage on the alert receiver with no help outside is the easiest matchup to exploit since the out route beats man leverage instantly. Sending a delayed blitz off the edge can disrupt the mesh point and force a bad decision before the RPO read develops.
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders inside the tackles versus your blockers to decide whether the run or the alert throw is favored.
Key the alert defender, usually a flat corner or overhang linebacker, immediately at the snap since his reaction dictates the read.
Use this against teams that load the box to stop the run since the out route punishes any defender who steps up early.
Pair this with Inside Zone and PA Jet Sweep from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the alert key and start jumping the out route.
Best called on early downs or short yardage since both options are conversion friendly and it keeps defenses honest against your run heavy calls.
