PA Y Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Off Close Wk that sells the run fake before releasing a deep crossing route from the Y (TE) that stretches all the way across the field to the opposite sideline. The diagram shows the backside receiver breaking off a deep post/dig toward the far sideline, the outside receiver on that side running a deep vertical to clear space, and the frontside receiver running an out route to the flat while the fullback or extra blocker releases into a flat route underneath. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser coming from the backside since play-action freezes linebackers, then works down to the flat route if the crosser is taken away, making this a strong man beater against aggressive linebacker flow and single-high looks.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth before the snap, shallow zone drops or blitz alignment mean he will not be able to sink and wall off the crosser. Key the safety over the crosser's side, a single-high safety rotating late is the biggest tell that the deep cross will have a soft spot to sit in against zone. Identify man coverage by checking corner alignment on the outside vertical, if he is playing with inside shade the crosser is likely to break open due to the natural pick action. Nano blitzes or interior pressure packages can disrupt this play quickly since the quarterback needs time to let the crosser develop across the field. Cover 3 with a rangy middle linebacker who can sink into the crosser's lane is the best defensive answer, forcing the quarterback to check down to the flat route instead.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when you have already established the run game since the play-action fake needs linebackers biting downhill to be effective.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the middle linebacker, if he is sitting in a shallow zone or showing blitz, the deep crosser will have a huge throwing lane behind him.
Against man coverage, let the crosser work fully across the field since it naturally picks off trailing defenders in man and creates rub opportunities.
Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Alert earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run action, making the play-action fake on Y Cross far more effective later.
If you see two-high safeties pre-snap, consider hot routing the flat route to a shallow drag instead, since the crosser may take longer to develop against a soft zone shell.
