This is a screen play built to counter overaggressive pass rushes and blitz heavy man coverage, with the primary read being the running back out of the backfield behind his convoy of blockers, and the four vertical routes serve purely as clock burners to occupy defenders and prevent quick diagnosis.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with aggressive edge rushers is the biggest green light for this screen since the backfield blockers can outnumber defenders at the point of attack. Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the snap, as that lateral pursuit angle is exactly what gets neutralized by the lead blockers. Zone coverage with disciplined linebacker eyes on the backfield is the primary counter, since sitting linebackers can read the screen and jump the throwing lane. User controlled defenders spying the running back or sitting at the line of scrimmage in a designed screen defense alignment will blow this play up immediately. Look for cornerback press coverage on the outside verticals, which usually indicates man principles that pull defenders away from the screen side and open running lanes.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in obvious pass rush situations where the defense shows blitz or aggressive man coverage at the line. Watch the defensive line pre-snap: if you see wide alignments or edge rushers crashing hard, this screen punishes that aggression immediately. Let the play develop for a full one to two seconds after the snap so your linemen can get out and set their blocks before you throw the screen. Pair this with Inside Zone or Counter Y earlier in a series so the defense keys run action from that side and bites on the screen fake later. Use hot routes sparingly here since the vertical routes are decoys, but consider adjusting a slot receiver to a quick hitter if the defense shows zone with soft underneath coverage.
