Flood Z Drive out of Shotgun Normal Off Close Wk floods one side of the field with three horizontal levels while the backside runs a deep dig to punish zone rotation. The Z receiver drives across the field on a deep in, the outside receiver on the flood side runs a deep out breaking to the sideline, and the underneath receiver clears out on a flat route with a running back releasing on an angle route out of the backfield for a checkdown. This is a Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built on horizontal stretch, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out to the flat, then works back to the Z drive route crossing the middle if the flood side is capped.
Defensive Reads
Post-snap, key the flat defender first: if he sinks with the flat route, the deep out window opens immediately for an explosive gain. Watch the middle linebacker drop depth on the Z drive route, since a shallow drop signals Cover 3 and tells you the drive route will sit open behind him. If you see two deep safeties holding their landmarks at the snap, that confirms Cover 4 and you should prioritize the Z drive route against the seam-flat defender's conflict. User-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flood area can jump the flat route, so have a answer ready to reset to the drive route or checkdown if you see a defender sitting on the flood side pre-snap. Man coverage or a hard blitz off the flood side is the biggest threat, since it removes the horizontal spacing advantage and forces a quick decision before the pocket collapses.
Usage Tips
Attack this play on second and medium to second and long when defenses lean on zone shells to protect against explosive plays.
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: if you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, the Z drive route sitting down behind linebackers becomes the primary target against Cover 4.
If the corner on the flood side is playing off with outside leverage, hot route the flat runner to a burst release upfield to occupy the underneath zone defender and open the deep out.
Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series to bait linebackers into cheating up on run action, then hit this concept when they bite.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to confirm man coverage, since man defenders will struggle to pass off the flood routes stacked vertically on one side.
