Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender pre-snap, if a linebacker or slot corner is sitting too deep the flat route underneath will be an easy pitch and catch. Watch the deep zone defender to the flood side, if he opens his hips to the sideline early the drive route sitting behind him becomes the money throw. Key the backside safety rotation, single high shells leave the dig route vulnerable to a lurking underneath defender jumping the crosser. Nano blitzes and interior pressure disrupt this play quickly since the quarterback needs time to work through three levels, so recognize blitz alignment before the snap and be ready to hot route or check down. Cover 4 with aggressive corners squatting on the deep out can bait a bad throw, so trust the drive route as the built in answer against those quarters shells.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium or third and short when defenses are likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4. Pre-snap, check the flat defender and curl to flat linebacker depth, if they are shaded wide the drive route underneath will be wide open. Hot route the backside dig into a shorter option if you are facing pressure heavy fronts, since the deep drop takes time to develop. Pair this call with Mtn Z Dig or Double Post from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the flood concept every snap. Against man coverage look immediately to the drive route since it creates natural rub leverage against the slot defender.
