Breakdown

Comeback Z Post is a five man route concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that stretches the field vertically and horizontally with a three level read on the right side. The X runs an outside comeback breaking back to the sideline, the Y runs a deep post from the slot bending across the middle, and the Z runs a corner route that cuts hard toward the sideline off the top of the route stem while the HB releases into the flat as a checkdown or man beater against linebackers. This is primarily a man beater built around the comeback and corner combo creating a natural pick element, with the deep post giving you a shot play if the safety bites on the outside routes, and the primary read progression starts at the comeback, works to the deep post if a safety vacates, then checks down to the HB flat route.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap check the corner alignment on the comeback side, tight coverage invites the corner throw while soft coverage tells you the comeback is there for an easy pitch and catch Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap since two high defenses take away the deep post window and force you to live underneath Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the throwing lane of the post route, that lurk threat is the biggest danger to this concept in competitive play Post snap read linebacker drops in the middle of the field, if they sink deep to take away the post the HB flat route becomes your quick answer This play struggles against aggressive man blitz packages with no safety help over the top, so recognize nano blitz pressure pre snap and be ready to get the ball out fast on the comeback or checkdown

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to long or third and medium when you need a chain mover but still want an explosive shot downfield built in

Motion is not shown here so key the corner depth at the snap, if the corner is playing off you have the comeback throw available almost immediately

Against single high safety looks the deep post has room to work since the safety has to respect the corner route breaking outside

Hot route the HB to a wide flat or speed out if you are getting linebacker spy pressure up the middle since the checkdown becomes your outlet against the blitz

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a series to get defenders keying run action, then come back to this play once they start jumping underneath routes
